Letter from the President

As I glance back over the last few months, SHFM has certainly been a whirlwind of activity, with events such as our annual Critical Issues Conference in New York in April, which enjoyed record attendance and sponsorship; our NRA breakfast in Chicago, where we highlighted this year’s Hennessy Traveler, Hal Ritchie, and recognized the U.S. Air Force servicemen and women who received awards this year for excellence in dining services; our Foundation Golf Tournament, honoring industry icon Dick Cattani of Restaurant Associates; as well as our regional events throughout the country with the overarching theme of Sustainability. We were also honored to participate in Morgan Stanley’s fantastic and well-attended Workplace and Supplier Diversity networking event this month. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge all the hard work of the Board, sponsors, FSA and the many volunteers on our committees and taskforces, who give so freely of their time for the benefit of our association. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

As I look ahead toward the upcoming season, the weather is heating up and so is SHFM as we prepare for the unveiling of our website redesign, which is sure to add some extra sizzle to your summer! The new site will launch by mid-August, with a mobile-friendly, streamlined interface and many new features and benefits. We paid close attention to your requests for simplified access to information, enhanced legibility and bite-sized content, with the ability to click for additional information. News and Event info is now front and center, as is our Resource center with easy access to original research and industry best practices. Foundation information is readily accessible, as are highlights from our social media feeds, right on our home page.

Members and site visitors will appreciate our new Member Innovation Showcase, which provides a forum for member companies to spotlight their innovative products and services. The Showcase promises to be an invaluable tool for finding the resources you need to support your personal and professional growth.

Stay tuned for updates on our upcoming National Conference, October 24-26, at the beautiful Turnberry Isle resort and spa in Miami. This year’s theme is Brand New: Branded For Tomorrow, and our planning committee is hard at work placing the final touches on a top-notch program, with sessions and events that promise to entertain and inspire you to hone your personal brand, fortify your corporate brand, cultivate brand ambassadors and build customer loyalty in a changing world.

I also invite you to check your email inbox or the SHFM website for information on upcoming regional events, as well as the upcoming release of our latest Corporate Dining Benchmarking study—an invaluable industry benchmarking resource and the only study of its kind, provided at no cost to SHFM members.

Finally, I’d like to close with a “call to action” for anyone who is thinking of how you might make the most out of your involvement with SHFM. I have personally found that whatever you put into this association will come back to you tenfold. Consider this quote from Japanese poet, Ryunosuke Satoro, “Individually we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.”

So, what will be your raindrop? Will you volunteer for a committee, support the Foundation, mentor a colleague, plan an event, join the board? As I think about the collective resources and accomplishments of our talented members, I feel grateful and blessed to be part of the SHFM family. Together, we can make it rain!
